About the event
Emily Parks will share the account of three patients, their stories of medical PTSD, and the impact it had on their delivery of healthcare presently as well as the long-term impact on their quality of life.
Target Audience
This presentation is intended for patients who experience increased anxiety and other symptoms of PTSD when engaging in the healthcare system and who suspect such anxiety significantly impacts their ability to engage in their healthcare and their overall treatment outcomes. This presentation is also intended for healthcare providers who are interested in how more conscious communication can aid both themselves and their patients in the collaborative delivery of healthcare with minimal medical trauma.

Emily Parks is a chronically ill young professional based out of the Washington D.C. area. Having been diagnosed with short bowel syndrome in infancy and unable to absorb nutrition orally, she was dependent on Parenteral Nutrition until receiving an isolated small bowel transplant. Combining her expertise in behavioral health with her lived experience of navigating the healthcare system has led her down the path of studying the impact of medical trauma and medical PTSD on patients and their treatment outcomes as well as the power of conscious communication throughout the U.S. healthcare system. Emily is currently pursuing an MBA in Healthcare Management at the Carey School of Business at Johns Hopkins University.
